Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students form clear, complete sentences when they write and speak. They use grade-appropriate grammar, notice errors, and revise language to fit the audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students create clear sentences with grade-appropriate agreement, verb tense, pronoun use, word order, and sentence structure. They can find errors, revise them, and explain why their choices fit the audience and task.
Common Misconceptions: Students may edit by sound alone and miss agreement, tense, pronoun, or sentence boundary errors. They may correct one word without checking how the change affects the rest of the sentence. Some confuse language variety with error instead of choosing forms that fit the audience and task.
How to Assess It: Give students three grade-level sentences, one correct and two with grammar or usage errors. Ask them to correct the errors and explain one change.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards to build a clear sentence, then change the subject and adjust every affected word.
Ask students to compare two sentence versions and explain which better fits a formal classroom presentation.
Run a five-sentence error hunt, awarding one point for each correction and another for a clear explanation.
Have students edit a mock email to the principal, choosing grammar and usage that fit a formal audience.
