What This Standard Means
Students need to use grammar choices that make their writing and speaking clear. In grade 7, that means recognizing phrases and clauses, building different sentence types, and fixing misplaced or dangling modifiers. They should be able to explain why a sentence works, not just guess from how it sounds.
Mastery looks like varied, controlled sentences in essays, discussions, and presentations. Students can combine short sentences without creating run-ons. Common trouble spots are confusing phrases with clauses, overusing simple sentences, and placing modifiers too far from the word they describe.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students cut apart sentence strips into subjects, verbs, phrases, and clauses, then rebuild them into compound and complex sentences.
- Ask students to revise a dull paragraph by combining sentences and explaining two grammar choices they made.
- Give a five-sentence exit ticket where students label each sentence type and fix one misplaced modifier.
- Show a confusing headline or sign, then have students rewrite it so the modifier clearly points to the right word.
