What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use standard English grammar when they write and speak. They check sentence structure, verb tense, agreement, pronoun use, and other usage choices for clarity and correctness.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences with consistent verb tense, clear pronoun references, and correct subject-verb agreement. They can edit their own speech and writing for grammar and usage errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may shift verb tense without a reason or pair singular subjects with plural verbs. They may use pronouns with unclear antecedents. They may also mistake fragments or run-ons for complete sentences.
How to Assess It
- Give students three sentences with grammar or usage errors. Ask them to correct each sentence and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips to cut, rearrange, and revise into complete sentences with correct agreement, tense, and pronoun use.
Ask students to explain how one grammar error can change or blur a sentence’s meaning, then revise an example.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at each station, including tense shifts, unclear pronouns, fragments, and agreement errors.
Have students edit a mock email to a principal, correcting grammar and usage while keeping the message clear and respectful.
