What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize measurements in tables and choose a graph that fits the data. They identify patterns, compare group results, explain differences, and use evidence to improve a design.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student creates a clear table or graph with accurate labels, units, and values. The student describes a supported pattern, compares results, and names a design change based on the data.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the wrong graph type, leave out units, or treat uneven scales as equal intervals. They may think different group results mean one group is wrong or suggest design changes without citing data.

How to Assess It

Give students flight distances for two groups testing paper airplanes. Ask them to graph the data, state one pattern, explain one group difference, and recommend one design change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two paper-bridge designs, record the number of pennies each holds, graph the results, and revise the weaker design.

  2. Write a claim explaining why two groups got different plant-growth results, using at least two data values as evidence.

  3. Play Graph Match by pairing data tables with graph cards, then justify each match to a partner.

  4. Compare a week of local temperatures from two weather apps and discuss why their readings may differ.
