What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name rules used at home and school. They explain how each rule prevents problems, protects people or belongings, or helps routines run smoothly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can study a familiar situation, suggest a sensible rule, and tell why it is needed. The explanation names a likely result, such as fewer injuries or smoother turns.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think rules exist only to stop fun or punish people. They may confuse a rule with a routine, or name a rule without explaining the problem it prevents.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of children running in a hallway. Ask, “What rule would help here, and how would it help?”

Ways to Teach It
Use toy figures to act out a messy classroom, then have students place rule cards where they would prevent problems.
Ask, “Which classroom rule helps us most, and what might happen without it?” Students draw and label their answer.
Play Rule Sort: students match picture cards to three headings, prevents injury, protects people or things, and keeps routines smooth.
Walk through the school, spot posted rules, and discuss the problem each rule helps prevent.
