What Students Need to Do: Students name familiar expectations at home and school. They explain whether each one keeps things organized, protects people or belongings, prevents injuries, or does more than one job.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain that putting toys away keeps a room orderly, visitors checking in protects the school, and walking indoors prevents injuries. They recognize that one rule may have several purposes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call routines, personal preferences, and rules the same thing. They may think rules exist only to punish people. They may assume each rule has only one purpose.
How to Assess It: Show three pictures: toys put away, a visitor checking in, and a child walking indoors. Ask students to name each rule and explain how it helps.

Lesson moves

Students sort picture cards into rules that organize a space, protect people or belongings, prevent injuries, or serve several purposes.
Ask, "What could happen if no one followed the walking-feet rule?" Students draw one result and explain it to a partner.
Play Rule Charades: one student acts out a classroom rule, and classmates name it and explain what it helps prevent.
Walk through the school, stopping at the visitor desk, hallway, and playground to name the rule used at each place.
