What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why a classroom, home, or playground rule exists. They connect each rule to safety, fairness, taking turns, or helping a group work well.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a familiar rule, a student can name the problem it prevents. The student can use “because” to explain what might happen without it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think rules exist only to avoid punishment or because an adult said so. They may not recognize that rules can protect people, support fairness, and create order.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw what might happen without the rule “Walk in the hallway.” Complete orally, “We have this rule because _____.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards showing rules, then have them sort the cards under safety, fairness, and order labels.
Ask, “What would happen if everyone talked at once during story time?” and record students’ reasons for the listening rule.
Play a matching game in which students pair rule cards with purpose cards, such as taking turns with fairness.
Walk through the school, stop at three posted rules, and ask students what each rule helps people do.
