What Students Need to Do

Students turn Texas data from different time periods into clear maps, graphs, and charts. They compare places and dates to find clusters, gaps, shifts, and regional trends, then support conclusions with data.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given Texas county or regional data, students choose a suitable display and include an accurate title, labels, scale, and legend. They explain where a pattern occurs, how it changed over time, and which data support their claim.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse total population with population density or misread color ranges on a map legend. They may ignore axis intervals, source dates, or changing boundaries. They may also assume that two overlapping patterns prove that one caused the other.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank Texas region map and a population table for 1900 and 2020. Ask them to shade population change, sketch a graph, and write one pattern supported by two data points.

   Layer tracing paper over Texas maps of railroads, oil fields, and city populations, then mark places where the patterns overlap.
