What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find facts in pictures, objects, songs, symbols, and short interviews. They explain how a source gives clues about the past. They also place information in order and sort it into clear groups.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student points to evidence when stating a fact, such as a detail in a photograph. The student names sources, explains what each can reveal, and sorts or sequences information accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call a guess or opinion a fact without pointing to evidence. They may think only books tell about the past, or that every old object gives the same information. They may sort by color instead of the assigned category or confuse first and last.

How to Assess It

Give students three pictures showing a morning routine. Ask them to place the pictures in order, state one fact, and point to the evidence for it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place photos, letters, toys, and coins at tables, then have students sort them by source type and explain one choice.

  2. Show an old classroom photo and ask, “What fact can you state, and what detail in the picture supports it?”

  3. Play Source Match by having students pair picture cards of artifacts, interviews, songs, and symbols with questions each source could answer.

  4. Students interview a school employee about a past school event, then draw and sequence three details from the interview.
