What Students Need to Do: Students put events or pictures in order from first to last. They also sort information into groups based on a shared feature.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can arrange three or four picture cards in a logical order and explain the sequence. The student can sort items and name the rule used.
Common Misconceptions: Students may order pictures by size or preference instead of time. They may also change the sorting rule midway or place an item in a group without explaining why.
How to Assess It: Give each student four handwashing picture cards to sequence, then six classroom item cards to sort into two groups. Ask the student to explain both choices.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards showing a seed growing, then have them arrange the cards and label first, next, and last.
Ask students to draw three steps in their morning routine and tell a partner how they chose the order.
Play Sort It Fast by naming a rule, such as school tools or toys, while students place cards into labeled hoops.
Sort grocery pictures by where they belong in a store, then sequence the steps from choosing food to putting it away.
