The Standard

- Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired through established research methodologies from a variety of valid sources, including technology. The student is expected to:
analyze information by applying absolute and relative chronology through sequencing, categorizing, identifying cause-and-effect relationships, comparing, contrasting, finding the main idea, summarizing, making generalizations and predictions, and drawing inferences and conclusions

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place events by date and describe what happened before, after, or at the same time. They group evidence, compare accounts, explain causes and results, summarize central points, and use clues to make supported conclusions or predictions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short Texas history source set, students build an accurate timeline, sort evidence, and explain how events connect. Their summary states the central point without copying, and each conclusion cites a specific detail.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often assume the event listed first caused the next event, even when dates or evidence show otherwise. They may retell every detail instead of summarizing, or make conclusions based on prior knowledge rather than the source.
How to Assess It
- Give students four dated statements about the Texas Revolution. Ask them to order the events, mark one cause and result, write a two-sentence summary, and support one inference.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs dated Texas Revolution event cards to sequence, group by theme, and connect with cause and result arrows.
Ask, "Which event most changed the outcome, and what source detail supports your conclusion?" then have students write and discuss.
Play Evidence Sort: teams place source cards under cause, result, similarity, difference, main point, or inference, then defend one choice.
Have students compare two local news reports, identify their shared main point, and predict what may happen next using stated evidence.
