What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine sources and organize events by exact dates and relative order. They sort evidence, trace causes and effects, compare accounts, and identify key points. They use details to summarize, infer, generalize, and predict.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build an accurate timeline and explain what happened before, after, or at the same time. The student can state a main idea, connect causes to effects, and support a conclusion with source details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse an event’s date with its place in a sequence. They may treat events that happened earlier as causes without proving a connection. They also may state opinions as inferences or include minor details in a summary.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage with four dated events. Ask them to sequence the events, name one cause-and-effect relationship, state the main idea, and write one supported inference.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs six dated American Revolution event cards to arrange, then have them connect two cards with a cause-and-effect arrow.
Ask, "Which event most changed what happened next?" Students defend one choice with two details from a shared source.
Run a source-sort relay where teams classify statements as cause, effect, fact, inference, main idea, or supporting detail, then explain disputed choices.
Students compare two weather reports, summarize the main message, and predict how the forecast could affect a family's weekend plans.
