What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize information into useful groups and put events in order. They connect causes to results, compare details, identify the main point, summarize, and use evidence to make reasonable claims about what happened or may happen next.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can turn a source into a clear sequence, comparison, or cause-and-effect chain. The student writes an accurate summary and supports each inference, prediction, or conclusion with relevant evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students often list details instead of stating the main idea, or retell everything instead of summarizing. They may confuse what happened first with what caused an event, and make predictions or conclusions without evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a 150-word passage from the current unit and a response grid labeled sequence, category, cause/effect, comparison, main idea, summary, generalization, prediction, and conclusion. Require one brief, evidence-based answer in each box.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs mixed event, person, place, cause, and effect cards to sequence and sort, then have them explain two choices.

  2. After reading two short accounts, ask, “What is the main idea, and which details support an inference both accounts allow?”

  3. Run an analysis relay where teams rotate through stations for sequencing, comparing, summarizing, predicting, and checking answers against evidence cards.

  4. Use a local news article to identify its main idea, trace one cause and effect, and predict a likely next event.
