What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students place events in order using dates and time words such as before, after, and during. They group information and explain how people, places, events, or ideas are alike, different, or connected. They state the main point, give a brief summary, and use details to support conclusions and predictions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a short passage, timeline, or source set, students place events correctly using dates and time clues. They explain similarities, differences, causes, and results with specific details. Their summaries, conclusions, and predictions match the evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any earlier event as a cause, even when no connection is shown. They often copy one detail as the main idea or retell everything instead of summarizing. They may confuse an inference with a guess, or mix up exact dates with words such as before and later.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Read, “In 1900, a hurricane struck Galveston and destroyed many buildings. Afterward, leaders raised parts of the city and built a seawall.” Ask students to order the events, name one cause and result, state the main idea, and infer why the seawall was built.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs eight dated Texas history cards to arrange on a floor timeline, then describe three event relationships using before, after, or during.

  2. Ask students to write: Which event had the greatest effect, and what two details support your conclusion?

  3. Play a card-sorting relay where teams classify statements as cause, result, similarity, difference, fact, or inference.

  4. Read a local news article, identify its main point, and predict one likely effect on the community using article evidence.
