What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather information from trustworthy interviews, songs, pictures, maps, artifacts, and short texts. They identify source types and explain what each reveals about the past. They use evidence to state facts, sequence events, sort details, find main ideas, predict, compare, and contrast.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name a source, pull out a fact, and point to the evidence that supports it. They can organize information from two sources and explain what is alike, different, or most important.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat guesses or opinions as facts. They may think every old object is reliable or that one source tells the whole story. They also confuse the main idea with one interesting detail.

How to Assess It

Give students a photograph, a simple map, and a short paragraph about the same event. Ask them to write one supported fact, name its source, and compare two details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place an old photograph, replica object, map, and letter at stations, then have students record what each source can reveal.

  2. Show two pictures of the same place from different years and ask, "What changed, what stayed the same, and what evidence proves it?"

  3. Play Source Sort by having teams classify cards as interview, picture, map, artifact, music, or print, then explain each choice.

  4. Students interview a school employee about how the school has changed, then compare the interview with an old yearbook photograph.
