What Students Need to Do: Students examine a picture, object, map, or short text and find details they can prove. They state a fact and point to the detail that supports it.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students separate facts from guesses or opinions. They give accurate statements and cite a specific word, image detail, label, or feature as proof.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call a personal opinion a fact or make a reasonable guess without proof. They may point to evidence that does not support their statement.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph of a playground. Ask students to write one fact about the scene and circle the part of the photograph that proves it.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a mystery object to observe, then have them record three facts and the visible evidence for each fact.
Display a community photograph and ask, "What can we prove from this picture, and what evidence supports each fact?"
Play Fact or Guess by sorting statement cards, then require students to name evidence for every card placed under Fact.
Use the school lunch menu to write two facts, with each menu word or price copied as supporting evidence.
