What Students Need to Do: Students determine the main point an author wants readers to accept. They separate that point from the topic, supporting evidence, and background details.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students state the author’s main point in their own words after reading a short source. They point to details that support their answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name the general topic or copy an interesting fact instead of stating the author’s main point. They may also choose a supporting detail as the claim.
How to Assess It: Give students a short historical excerpt and ask, “What does the author want readers to believe, and which sentence best supports your answer?”

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort sentence strips from a historical speech into three groups: main point, supporting evidence, and background information.
Read a short newspaper excerpt and ask students to write one sentence explaining what the author wants readers to accept.
Play Claim Detective by showing three possible main points for each passage and awarding points for choosing and defending the best one.
Examine a local advertisement and identify what the creator wants the audience to believe about the product or service.
