What Students Need to Do: Students observe a photo, object, map, or short passage and tell what they know from it. They point to a detail that supports each statement and separate facts from guesses.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student states an accurate fact in a complete sentence and identifies the matching evidence. The student avoids adding details that the source does not show.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call an opinion or guess a fact. They may choose a detail that does not support their statement or use prior knowledge instead of source evidence.
How to Assess It: Show a photo of a community park and ask, “Tell one fact about this place. Point to the detail that proves it.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs a classroom object to inspect, then have them state one fact and show the feature that supports it.
Display a neighborhood photo and ask, “What can we say for sure, and what would only be a guess?”
Play Fact Detective by showing picture cards and awarding a point when students match each fact to visible evidence.
Examine a school lunch menu and have students state one fact about Friday’s meal using words or pictures from the menu.
