What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use interviews, songs, pictures, maps, and objects to answer a question. They record useful details and name the source for each detail.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find relevant facts in at least two different source types. They explain where each fact came from and leave out details that do not answer the question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat pictures as decoration or assume every detail is useful. They may confuse an interviewee’s opinion with a fact or forget to identify the source.
How to Assess It
- Show a neighborhood map and play a 30-second interview clip. Have students write one fact from each source and label where each fact came from.

Ask, “What can this song tell us about the community, and what can it not prove?” then have students write two sentences.
Play Source Sort by having teams match fact cards to an interview, picture, map, song, or artifact.
Invite a school employee for a short interview, then have students compare the answers with a school map or photograph.
