What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether oral accounts, documents, images, and artifacts are primary or secondary sources. They find relevant sources, check reliability, and use evidence to learn about world cultures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students classify sources based on who created them, when they were created, and their purpose. They select reliable sources for a question and cite details that support a conclusion about a culture.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every old source is primary or every website is secondary. They may judge reliability by appearance alone or treat one source as proof of an entire culture.
How to Assess It
- Give students four source cards about Diwali. Have them label each primary or secondary, choose the best source for studying the celebration, and explain one reliability clue.
