What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether a source is primary or secondary and find sources that answer questions about Texas. They check who created each source, when it was made, and whether its claims are supported.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify interviews, documents, artifacts, biographies, images, and websites. They select a trustworthy source, gather relevant facts, and explain why the source fits the question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every old source is primary or every website is secondary. They may also treat the first search result as reliable without checking the author, date, evidence, or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diary excerpt and a textbook paragraph about the same Texas event. Ask them to label each source, choose the stronger source for one question, and explain why.
