What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask simple questions and notice details in interviews, songs, pictures, symbols, and objects. With adult help, they choose information that answers the class question.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find one relevant fact in two different kinds of sources. They can point to each source and explain what they learned from it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat guesses as facts or focus on picture details unrelated to the topic. They may also think symbols show real objects or that every source gives the same information.
How to Assess It
- Show an old school photo and play a short adult comment about school. Ask students to draw one fact and identify which source provided it.

Ways to Teach It
Place a lunchbox, class photo, and school map on tables; students rotate, sketch one detail, and tell what each source reveals.
Play a short community song, then ask, “What did the words teach us, and which part helped you know?”
Play Source Match: students pair fact cards with an interview clip, picture, symbol, song, or artifact that supports each fact.
Help students interview the school nurse about her job, then compare her answer with a photo of tools she uses.
