What Students Need to Do: Students find community facts in maps, photographs, interviews, books, news reports, and trusted websites. They collect information about past events, current events, and location, then note where each fact came from.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can choose a useful source for a community question and record relevant facts. The student can use several source types and identify which facts describe history, current events, or geography.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse past events with current news or think geographic data only means place names. They may copy unrelated facts, rely on one source, or forget to record where information came from.
How to Assess It: Give students a community map, an old photograph, and a short current news item. Ask them to record one fact from each and label the source.

Lesson moves

Set up stations with a local map, old photograph, newspaper clipping, and town website; students record one fact from each source.
Ask students to write: How has our community changed, and which two sources support your answer?
Play Source Match: teams pair community questions with resource cards, then explain why each source would help.
Have students interview a longtime resident about a local change, then locate that place on a community map.
