What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use grids, legends, symbols, scales, and compass roses to read and make maps. They turn population and resource data into graphs or maps and describe patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can locate places by grid, follow directions, estimate distance with a scale, and explain map symbols. They can create an accurate graph or map from a data table and state a supported conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse grid coordinates, ignore the legend, or treat map distance as actual distance. They may confuse total population with population distribution or make graphs with uneven scales.
How to Assess It
- Give students a Texas map with a grid, scale, compass rose, resource symbols, and a three-region population table. Ask them to locate one resource, estimate one distance, graph the population data, and describe one pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a grid on the floor, place resource symbol cards in squares, and have partners follow coordinate and direction clues.
Show a population map and ask, "Where are people clustered, and what map evidence supports your answer?"
Run a map relay where teams draw cards requiring them to find coordinates, decode symbols, give directions, or measure distance.
Use a Texas energy map to choose a factory location, then justify the choice using resources, population, distance, and direction.
