What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and create maps using grids, legends, symbols, scales, and compass roses. They turn population and resource data into maps or graphs, then explain patterns shown by the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can locate places by coordinates, use scale to find distance, and explain what symbols mean. They can choose an appropriate graph or map and make accurate claims from it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the legend with the compass rose or read grid coordinates in the wrong order. They may treat each symbol as one item without checking the legend, or make claims that the data does not support.
How to Assess It
- Give students a population table and a blank gridded map with a scale and compass rose. Ask them to map the data, add a legend, and write one supported pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a school map, ruler, colored pencils, and stickers to add a grid, scale, compass rose, symbols, and legend.
Show two county population maps and ask, "Where do people cluster, and what map evidence supports your claim?"
Play Map Element Match: teams pair cards showing symbols, legends, scales, grid coordinates, and compass directions with correct map examples.
Use local population and water resource data to make a bar graph, then mark the same data on a county map.
