What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students collect facts about one topic from more than one spoken or visual source. With adult help, they identify who made each source and whether its information is useful and believable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can ask a simple interview question and name a fact learned from the answer. The student can study a picture, symbol, or object and describe what it shows without adding guesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every picture, song, or spoken claim as factual. They may confuse what they observe with what they imagine. They may also collect interesting details that do not fit the topic.
How to Assess It
- Show a historical photo and read a short interview excerpt about the same event. Ask students to state one fact from each source and explain how it fits the topic.

Ways to Teach It
Set out a replica rotary phone, an old school photograph, and a recorded family story; students list one fact from each source.
Ask, “What can this photograph tell us, and what can it not tell us?” Students draw one observation and write one question.
Play Source Match: students pair picture, symbol, object, and interview cards with fact cards, then explain each match.
Help students interview the school nurse about her job, then compare her answer with a photo of the nurse’s office.
