What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine photographs, objects, songs, symbols, and interviews to learn about people and events. They state facts supported by what they see or hear, then place information in order and groups. With adult help, they choose sources that match the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a photograph, artifact, or interview and explain what it can reveal about the past. The student can point to supporting details, sequence events correctly, and sort information by a clear rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a guess a fact even when no source detail supports it. They may think only written records are historical sources, or that any old object proves a claim. They may confuse sequencing with sorting and arrange events without using time clues.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-box exit ticket with an old classroom photo, an interview quote, and three daily-routine picture cards. Students label source types, write one supported fact, order the pictures, and circle school activities.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Set out a replica washboard, rotary telephone, and old photograph; students observe each, name its source type, and record one supported fact.
Display two family photographs and ask: What can we know from each picture, and what would we still need to ask?
Play Timeline Relay: teams arrange five picture cards, explain the time clues, then sort the cards into work, school, and play.
Help students interview a grandparent or school staff member about childhood, then compare the answer with a photograph or object.
