What Students Need to Do: Students recognize photographs, letters, maps, newspapers, recordings, and objects from the past. They tell what clues each item gives about how people lived or what happened.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the type of source and point to a detail that gives information about the past. The student can also explain that one source may not tell the whole story.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every old object is an artifact or that artifacts must be found in museums. They may treat a photograph or written account as a complete and fully accurate record.
How to Assess It: Show an old class photograph and a lunchbox. Ask students to identify each item and state one thing it could teach us about the past.

Lesson moves

Set out a photograph, letter, map, and old toy for students to sort, then label each item with one clue it provides.
Show an old school photograph and have students write one thing they can learn and one question the photograph cannot answer.
Play Source Detective by drawing item cards and naming whether each is a photograph, document, recording, map, or object.
Ask students to photograph a family keepsake and share what it teaches about their family’s past.
