What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why different immigrant groups came to Texas, locate where they settled, and describe how migration changed communities. They read maps, tables, and age profiles to explain population growth and predict needs for schools, clinics, and roads.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use map or census evidence to connect a group's reasons for moving with its settlement location and lasting influence. The student can compare growth rates and age distributions, then justify where public services should expand.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat immigration and migration as the same, or assume every group came for one reason. They may confuse total population with growth rate and read a large county as a fast-growing county. They may overlook how age distribution and urban growth change demand for services.
How to Assess It
- Give students a Texas county growth map and two age distribution charts. Ask: Which county will likely need more schools or health care, and what two data points support your answer?
