What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each immigrant group to reasons for leaving home and reasons for choosing a Texas location. They locate settlement areas and support their choices with evidence such as land, jobs, religion, recruitment, or family ties.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place German communities near New Braunfels and Fredericksburg and Czech communities in Central Texas. They can explain how farmland, economic opportunity, religious freedom, and existing communities shaped these settlement patterns.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume European groups settled evenly across Texas or place them all in East Texas. They may confuse reasons for leaving a homeland with reasons for choosing a specific Texas community.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Mark the main settlement areas for German and Czech immigrants on a blank Texas map. Give one reason each group came and settled there.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank Texas map and immigrant-group cards, then have them place each group and attach a reason card.
Ask students to write: How did land, jobs, religion, and existing communities shape one group’s choice of settlement?
Play a matching relay with group, motive, and settlement cards, requiring teams to explain each completed set.
