- Students describe several accounts of how the first people may have reached Texas. They use maps, archaeological evidence, and tribal oral traditions to support each account.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain a land route, a coastal route, or a tribal origin account without presenting any as settled fact. The student cites a source detail as support.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat American Indians as one group or assume every group arrived in Texas at the same time. They may also confuse a supported theory with proven fact.
How to Assess It
- Give students a simple migration map and a short source excerpt. Ask: “Explain one possible origin of American Indians in Texas and cite one supporting detail.”
