What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how specific early Texas Indian groups obtained food, clothing, shelter materials, tools, and desired goods. They connect farming, hunting, fishing, gathering, and trading to each group’s region and resources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare how the Caddo, Jumano, Karankawa, and Lipan Apache got and exchanged goods. The student explains how an activity met a need or want and how the region supported it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every group lived the same way or relied on only one activity, such as hunting. They may picture trade as buying with money instead of exchanging food, tools, hides, pottery, and other goods.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose the Caddo or Karankawa. Name two economic activities and explain how one used a local resource to meet a need or want.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a Texas regions map, group cards, and resource cards, then have them build and explain accurate group, resource, and activity matches.
Ask, “Why was farming more common among the Caddo than the Karankawa?” Students answer with two pieces of geographic evidence.
Play a matching relay where teams connect a group, region, resource, activity, and the need or want it addressed.
Compare a local farmers market with early trade networks, noting what people exchange, why they trade, and how location shapes available goods.
