What Students Need to Do

Students describe how American Indian groups and early settlers obtained food, shelter, tools, and other goods. They connect farming, hunting, ranching, crafting, and trade to local resources and community needs.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare groups such as the farming and trading Caddo and the hunting and trading Comanche. They can explain how settlers used crops, livestock, skilled labor, and trade to support their communities.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume all American Indian groups lived and worked in the same way. They may think early families produced everything themselves or used money for every trade. They may also confuse needs with wants.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one economic activity used by an American Indian group and one used by settlers. Explain what need or want each activity met.
