What Students Need to Do

Students explain how geography, natural resources, labor, and trade shaped colonial economies. They identify where shipbuilding, fishing, farming, and cash crop production developed and why.

Students can compare the economies of New England, Middle, and Southern colonies using accurate examples. They can connect an industry to local land, climate, resources, or labor.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every colony had the same economy or that most colonists worked in factories. They may confuse cash crops with food grown mainly for a family’s use.

How to Assess It

Give students three items: ships, wheat, and tobacco. Ask them to match each item to a colonial region and explain one match using geography or resources.

   Give groups resource, climate, product, and region cards to sort into three colonial economy sets, then defend their matches.

   Ask students to write which colonial region offered the best place to start a business and support their choice with two facts.

   Play a map relay where teams place industry cards, including shipbuilding, fishing, wheat, rice, and tobacco, on the correct colonial regions.
