What Students Need to Do

Students explain how railroads, highways, petroleum production, and factories helped Texas cities grow. They connect those changes to the move from farm work toward industrial, transportation, and service jobs.

Students can use a map, timeline, or job data to explain why a Texas city grew. They can name jobs that declined or expanded and link those shifts to specific industries.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat oil as the only cause of city growth or assume farming disappeared completely. They may also confuse extracting raw materials with manufacturing finished goods.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose transportation, oil and gas, or manufacturing. Explain how it helped one Texas city grow, then name two jobs it created or expanded.

   Give groups industry, transportation, job, and city cards to build cause-and-effect chains, then defend one chain with a Texas example.

   Ask students to write: Which changed Texas cities more, railroads or oil, and what job evidence supports your claim?

   Play a job-sort relay where teams place occupation cards under agrarian, industrial, or urban service, then correct disputed choices using a timeline.
