What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how work shifted as more Texans lived in cities. They explain why construction, manufacturing, transportation, office, retail, and service jobs grew while farm work became a smaller share of employment.

- Students can compare jobs in rural and urban Texas across time. They connect city growth, railroads, oil, factories, and population increases to specific occupations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think farm and ranch jobs disappeared completely. They may also assume every Texas city developed the same industries or that urban growth happened all at once.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A Texas town grows after a railroad and oil field open. Name three jobs likely to grow and explain why each would grow.
