What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify common ways people made money in Texas regions in the past and how they make money there now. They connect jobs such as farming, ranching, fishing, oil production, tourism, and technology to places and time periods.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a Texas map, photograph, or short description to name likely types of work in a region. They can sort examples by region and by past or present without treating all Texas communities alike.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think everyone in Texas worked on ranches or in oil fields. They may assume each job belongs to only one region, or confuse historical work with jobs common today.
How to Assess It
- Give students two Texas region cards. Ask them to list one past and one present way people earn money in each region.

Ask students to write: How has work changed in one Texas region, and what kinds of work have remained?
