What Students Need to Do: Students identify jobs and industries found in different U.S. regions in earlier times and now. They explain how land, resources, technology, and population shape work.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use maps, images, or short texts to give accurate regional examples. They describe similarities and differences across regions and time periods, supported by evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every person in a region had the same job. They may place industries in the wrong region or think older types of work disappeared completely.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket: Choose two U.S. regions, name one past and one present job in each, then explain one reason for a difference.

Lesson moves

Students sort job cards by U.S. region and time period, place them on a map, and explain two choices.
Ask students to write: How did natural resources affect work in the Northeast, South, Midwest, or West?
Play a matching game with region cards, job cards, and past or present labels, awarding points for accurate explanations.
Students compare local job ads with occupations listed in a historical census, then explain what changed and what stayed.
