What Students Need to Do: Students compare regional economies during periods such as the colonial era and the decades before the Civil War. They use maps, data, and sources to explain causes and trace effects on labor, migration, cities, and politics.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given evidence from two regions, students make an accurate comparison and support it with specific facts. They connect geography, resources, technology, transportation, or labor systems to clear economic and social results.
Common Misconceptions: Students may describe the North as entirely industrial, the South as entirely plantation-based, and the West as only agricultural. They may also overlook slavery as an economic labor system or confuse an economic effect with its cause.
How to Assess It: Give students an 1860 map of railroads and cotton production. Ask them to name one regional difference, explain one cause, and predict one effect.

Lesson moves

Students sort resource, labor, transportation, and industry cards onto maps of the North, South, and West, then explain each placement.
Ask students to write which factor most shaped regional economies before 1860, using two facts from class sources.
Teams play a cause-and-effect matching game with cards such as cotton gin, enslaved labor, canals, factories, migration, and urban growth.
