What Students Need to Do
- Students compare Texas maps from different time periods and notice where settlements cluster or form lines. They connect those locations to rivers, ports, trails, railroads, highways, resources, and jobs.

- Students can describe a settlement pattern using map evidence. They can explain why the pattern changed when transportation routes, industries, or access to resources changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think towns appeared randomly or that modern cities were always large. They may name a nearby river or railroad without explaining how it supported travel, trade, water, or jobs.
How to Assess It
- Show maps of Texas settlements from 1850 and 1920. Ask, "Describe one change in where settlements appear and explain one likely reason for it."

Give pairs Texas maps, settlement cards, and yarn to connect towns with rivers, cattle trails, railroads, ports, or highways.
Ask students to write: "Why might a town grow beside a railroad in 1900 but beside a highway later?"
