What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how buyers and sellers make choices in a market. They use supply and demand to predict changes in prices and available goods. They connect cash crops and railroads to business growth in Texas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a market example, students can explain why a price or quantity might change. They can identify choice and business opportunity as benefits. They can show how cash crops and railroads expanded Texas markets.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think high demand makes prices fall or that supply means how much people want. They may think free enterprise has no rules. They may miss how railroads connected Texas farmers to more buyers.

How to Assess It

Ways to Teach It

  1. Run a classroom pecan market with paper pecans, buyer tokens, changing supplies, and a price chart after each round.

  2. Show a Texas railroad map and ask students to write how a new rail line could change choices for farmers and buyers.

  3. Give pairs market scenario cards to sort as supply changes or demand changes, then predict whether prices will rise or fall.

  4. Use a grocery ad to compare brands, prices, and quantities, then identify examples of consumer choice and seller opportunity.
