What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how people benefit when businesses offer different goods and services. They explain how the system gives consumers choices and gives people opportunities to start businesses or earn income.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a market scenario, students can point out examples of consumer choice and business opportunity. They can explain each benefit using details from the scenario.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think free enterprise means goods and services are free. They may also think opportunity guarantees that every business will succeed or that consumers can buy anything they want.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Two food trucks sell different lunches, and a student plans to open a snack stand. Identify one choice and one opportunity.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom market with product cards, play money, and student-run shops, then have buyers record how multiple sellers affect their choices.
Ask students to write: “How does having three shoe stores help shoppers and people who want to open a business?”
Sort scenario cards into Choice, Opportunity, or Neither, then require students to explain one card from each group.
Compare two local grocery ads and list the choices shoppers have and the opportunities each store creates for workers or owners.
