What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how buyers and sellers make choices in a free enterprise system. They describe how changes in supply or demand can affect prices and sales.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can predict what happens to price when an item becomes scarce or more popular. They support the prediction with details about buyers, sellers, supply, and demand.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think demand means wanting an item, even when buyers cannot or will not pay for it. They may reverse supply and demand effects or assume sellers can set any price without consequences.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “A freeze destroys much of the orange crop, but shoppers still want orange juice. Predict what happens to its price and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It
Run a classroom market using tokens, paper goods, and changing supply amounts, then record how selling prices shift.
Ask students to write: “Why might a popular toy cost more before a holiday and less afterward?”
Play a supply and demand card game where teams match market changes with likely price increases or decreases.
Compare two grocery advertisements and discuss how sales, shortages, seasonal crops, and customer demand may explain price differences.
