What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how changes in supply and demand affect prices, consumer choices, and production. They apply these ideas to American industry, farming, and plantation agriculture. They identify who benefited and who was harmed.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can predict how a market change affects buyers, prices, and producers, then explain the reasoning. They can explain how cotton demand encouraged plantation expansion and increased the forced labor of enslaved people.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse demand with supply and assume high demand means an item is plentiful. They may think prices rise when supply rises. Some describe plantation labor as paid work, overlooking coercion and human harm.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Demand for cotton rises while supply stays fixed. Predict one effect on cotton prices, buyers, farms, and enslaved workers, then explain why.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups beans as goods and paper coins, then change available beans or buyer requests and record price changes.

  2. Ask: Who gained and who was harmed when cotton demand expanded plantations, and what evidence supports your answer?

  3. Run a card sort matching market scenarios with likely changes in price, consumer choices, and producer output.

  4. Compare two grocery ads for eggs, then connect price differences to shortages, disease, shipping costs, or changing demand.
