Students trace how colonial trade and private businesses grew into the United States free enterprise system. They explain how ownership, consumer choice, competition, and profit shape business decisions. They give examples of benefits such as more choices, new products, and opportunities to earn income.

Students can place colonial markets and modern businesses on a simple development timeline. Given a business example, they can identify the owner, consumers, competition, profit motive, and benefits. They support each claimed benefit with evidence from the example.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think free enterprise means businesses face no laws or government rules. They may confuse profit with total sales or assume competition always lowers every price. Some may think colonial America had the same markets and businesses found today.

Give students this exit prompt: “Two stores sell similar shoes at different prices. Explain how free enterprise works in this example and name one benefit for consumers.”
