What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace how private ownership, trade, competition, and profit shaped colonial businesses and later the national economy. They explain how British trade rules limited colonial choices and how independence expanded economic freedom.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can place major economic changes in order and explain why each mattered. They can compare colonial mercantilism with the growing free enterprise system after independence using accurate examples.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think colonial trade was completely free or that free enterprise means no government rules. They may also confuse free enterprise with free goods or assume all colonists had equal economic opportunities.

How to Assess It

Give students four event cards: Navigation Acts, colonial shops, independence, and wider national trade. Ask them to order the cards and explain two connections.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort picture cards showing farms, workshops, ports, merchants, and British trade laws into economic freedoms and economic limits.

  2. Write a response to this prompt: How did independence change the choices available to American farmers, merchants, and craftspeople?

  3. Play a timeline relay where teams sequence economic events and earn points by explaining how each event affected trade or business.

  4. Compare two local stores by listing their products, prices, competitors, owners, and customer choices as examples of free enterprise.
