Common Misconceptions: Students may think free enterprise means products are free or businesses have no rules. They may assume every business succeeds or that only owners benefit. They may confuse competition with cooperation.
How to Assess It: Give students this prompt: “Two grocery stores compete for customers in one town. Name one likely benefit and explain why it may happen.”

Lesson moves

Run a classroom market with several paper airplane sellers, play-money buyers, and choices about price, design, and quality.
Ask students to write: “How can competition between two shoe companies benefit customers and workers?”
Play a card sort matching scenarios, such as new products or lower prices, with choice, competition, profit, or private ownership.
Compare two local grocery advertisements, then identify how price, product variety, and special offers show benefits for shoppers.
