What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how changes in available goods and buyer interest affect prices, product availability, and consumer choices. They use examples to predict what consumers may buy or avoid.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read a short market scenario and identify whether supply or demand changed. They can explain the likely effect on price and consumer behavior using evidence from the scenario.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think high demand always means plenty of a product is available. They may also assume sellers set prices without considering shortages, surpluses, or buyer interest.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “A freeze destroys much of the orange crop, but shoppers still want orange juice. Predict what happens to price and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups limited classroom coupons to bid on scarce pencils, then repeat with more pencils and compare prices.

  2. Ask students to write why concert ticket prices may rise when many fans want fewer available seats.

  3. Play a scenario card sort where students match changes in supply or demand with likely price and consumer responses.

  4. Compare grocery ads from two weeks and explain how seasonal availability or shopper demand may affect listed prices.
