What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain why prices often rise when many buyers want an item but few are available. They also explain why prices often fall when demand drops or more items become available.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read a simple market situation, identify what changed, and predict whether the price will rise or fall. They support the prediction with supply and demand.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think sellers can raise prices without considering buyers or available goods. They may also confuse supply with demand or assume high demand always means high supply.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A store has only five popular toys left, but 20 customers want one. Predict what may happen to the price and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups ten tokens to bid on three pencils, then repeat with twelve pencils and compare the final prices.

  2. Ask students to write why lemonade might cost more on a hot day than on a cold day.

  3. Play a card sort where students match market changes with rising prices, falling prices, or no likely change.

  4. Compare grocery advertisements for strawberries in and out of season, then discuss how availability may affect price.
