What Students Need to Do: Students identify money spent to make a product and money earned from sales. They compare the amounts and explain how changing costs or prices changes profit.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a simple business example, students calculate total costs, sales revenue, and profit. They predict how a change in costs or price affects profit and support the answer with numbers.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat all sales revenue as profit and forget to subtract costs such as materials, labor, or packaging. They may subtract in the wrong order or compare one item's cost with revenue from several items.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: A student spends $12 making 6 bookmarks and sells each for $3. Find the profit, then explain what happens if costs rise by $3.

Lesson moves

Give pairs paper, ribbon, price tags, and play money; assign supply costs, conduct bookmark sales, and calculate each shop's profit.
Ask, "If a stand sells the same number of drinks but raises the price, how will profit change? Explain with numbers."
Play Profit Match: students pair cost and sales cards, calculate profit, then sort examples from least to greatest profit.
Compare a school fundraiser item's purchase cost and sale price, then find profit per item and predict profit from 20 sales.
