What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect a job with the money a worker earns. They explain that workers can spend that money on items or on help provided by others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a job, tell how the worker earns money, and give examples of possible purchases. The student correctly sorts purchases as goods or services.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think people receive money simply because they need it or that all work pays the same amount. They may also confuse goods, such as shoes, with services, such as a haircut.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: “Maya earns money by walking dogs. Name one good and one service she could buy with her earnings.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom job station where students earn play money, then choose goods and services from a picture menu.
Ask students to write about one worker, how that person earns money, and two things the worker might buy.
Play a card match game pairing jobs with earnings, then sort purchase cards into goods and services.
Have students interview an adult about a job and one type of good or service that earned money helps the household buy.
